Understanding Recipe Costs and Store Prices
Updated Aug 31, 2026 · 1 min read
Many recipes on FourFork show an estimated cost per serving. This estimate is built from real store data, not guesses — here's how it works and what can make it vary.
Where prices come from
FourFork links ingredients to real grocery products with live pricing from Kroger and Walmart. When a recipe is costed, each ingredient's quantity is converted to the linked product's package size to work out how much of a package the recipe uses.
Why estimates vary
- Store and region — prices differ between stores and locations.
- Package math — some estimates assume you use part of a package; the rest stays in your pantry for next time.
- Missing links — if an ingredient has no linked product yet, it can't contribute a price, so the total may be a partial estimate.
- Price freshness — store prices are refreshed regularly but can lag same-day changes.
Costs in your cart
Your shopping cart shows per-item prices from the linked store products and an estimated total, so you know roughly what the run will cost before you leave.
