Swapping Ingredients with Substitutions

Updated Aug 31, 2026 · 1 min read

Out of buttermilk? Allergic to peanuts? Many ingredients on FourFork carry curated substitutions, and swapping one updates the recipe view for you — quantities, instructions, everything.

Making a swap

  1. On a recipe page, look for Show substitutions under an ingredient.
  2. Pick a substitute. The ingredient list updates with the right quantity for the substitute, and instruction text mentioning the original ingredient follows the swap.

Swaps are yours alone

A substitution changes how you see the recipe — it doesn't edit the recipe for anyone else, and the original author's version stays intact. Your swaps are remembered the next time you open the recipe.

Resetting

You can undo a single swap or reset the whole recipe back to the original at any time.

Substitutions and your diet

Substitutions can change a recipe's dietary profile in both directions — swapping butter for oil may make a dish dairy-free, while another swap could introduce an allergen. The recipe's dietary tags reflect your current selections, so keep an eye on them after swapping.
