Make It or Buy It: Sub-Recipes
Updated Aug 31, 2026 · 1 min read
Some ingredients are really recipes of their own — pizza dough, spice blends, sauces. When a recipe uses one of these and a from-scratch version exists on FourFork, you can choose how you want to handle it.
Buy it
The default: the component appears as a single ingredient line (for example, 1 cup marinara sauce) that goes on your shopping list like anything else.
Make it
Switch the component to make mode and the recipe unfolds: the component's own ingredients join the ingredient list as a grouped section, and its steps slide into the instructions — scaled to exactly the amount the main recipe needs, not the sub-recipe's original yield.
Things worth knowing
- Your make/buy choice is per-recipe and remembered for you; it doesn't change the recipe for others.
- Cost estimates follow your choice — making from scratch prices the raw ingredients; buying prices the product.
- You can flip back at any time.
